Schools.com, a leading education site, recently released an infographic highlighting results from a survey conducted by Kelton Research and Kno, Inc. that reveals many surprising facts about students and textbooks. The survey discovered that 73 percent of college students would do something they might not normally do, including giving up dating or sex, to avoid ever having to carry another heavy textbook. Furthermore, these students would prefer that all textbooks were digitally accessible through e-readers, smart phones, or the Internet.
?On average, the weight of a typical textbook load is equivalent to a car tire and students are carrying them in their backpacks every day,? said Seth Restaino, Schools.com spokesperson. ?It?s no wonder they would be willing to take such extreme measures to get rid of them. With this information in mind, we created an infographic that sheds light on how the future of education and textbooks may change over the course of time.?
As testament to the shift to digital, Amazon?s Kindle recent started offering textbook rentals that can save college students up to 80% of the hundreds they spend on textbooks each year. Over the 2010-2011 school year, college students spent an average of $ 1,137 on textbooks alone.
?The evolution of digital textbooks is a great solution for students,? expressed Restaino. ?Students will no longer have to cut back on food, travel and entertainment just to afford something that can be easily stored in an iPad that weighs less than 1 ? pounds.?
In addition to being heavy and costly, students find that textbooks are inconvenient, reporting that productivity is diminished as a result of some of the elements inherent with textbooks such as missing pages.
