More than 100 restaurants have signed on to participate in the first New York Sake Week which launches June 1, 2009 and runs through June 5th. Five days of sake exploration.
Participating restaurants will offer a variety of sake-focused opportunities from special menu pairings, cocktails, sake flights, educational events and a host of sakecentric activities.
"Our goal for Sake Week is to educate, to expand the understanding of sake," noted Monica Samuels, Sake Ambassador for Southern Wine and Spirits (SWS). "There is an entirely different world of sake beyond the basic hot liquid to which most Americans have been exposed. Premium sake are like an exquisite fine wine with a diversity of styles created by brewing techniques, ingredients and geography. From light and dry to full-bodied and semi-sweet, the flavors can be very complex. And, unknown to most, sake pairs with an amazing array of food from traditional Japanese to Thai, French, Italian, Barbecue, South American, Raw. The culinary alignments just go on and on."
Organized by Monica Samuels and a team at SWS, Sake Week will expose New Yorkers to the diversity offered in the ancient wine of Japan (Nihon-shu). From complex and extensively varied styles to the realization that sake pairs with the vast flavors of world cuisine. Sake from a variety of Japanese Kura's (breweries) and from Oregon will be highlighted throughout the week. Sake Week participants will have their notion of sake changed forever.
